No one wants to lather, rinse, and repeat every day—not only do most people not have the time, but washing your hair too often can actually hinder growth and cause breakage, according to hair experts. Fortunately, the best dry shampoo can give your hair renewed life, making it look voluminous, fresh, and clean, to help extend the length between washes.
As someone who regularly works up a sweat, I thought a daily shampoo was the only way to keep my hair clean, but it turns out I was actually adding to the problem. Kiley Fitzgerald, Redken Celebrity Stylist, explains that in addition to potential breakage, “when you shampoo your hair, you rid your scalp of oils, causing it to reproduce oil back into the scalp more quickly.” A dry shampoo can help regulate these oils without stripping them, helping your hair look clean and fresh for longer, and keeping your scalp and hair at peak health.
Meet the Experts: Kiley Fitzgerald, Redken Celebrity Stylist; Kimberly Vaughn, C.E.O. of HPI Hair Partners and a certified trichologist.
In addition to regulating your scalp oils, dry shampoo has a slew of desirable benefits. First and foremost, it saves you time. It also keeps your hair smelling great, even when it’s dirty and “adds so much body and volume at the root of the hair, helping to style and keep longer,” Fitzgerald adds. Not to mention, dry shampoo can be used preventatively to help reduce oils before they even have a chance to coat your strands, keeping your clean hair looking fresh.
Fortunately (or unfortunately), there are countless dry shampoos on the market today to choose from. So, in my hunt to find the perfect dry shampoo to help regulate my scalp’s oil production and keep it looking clean and fresh, even in the face of sweat, I enlisted the help of my Prevention coworkers, certified trichologist and C.E.O. of HPI Hair Partners, Kimberly Vaughn, as well as countless reviewers to corroborate my own thoughts.
If you’re in the market to stock up on dry shampoo but don’t know where to start, never fear. Keep reading to see the best dry shampoos, according to hair experts, Prevention editors, and my very own testing.
Pros
Works on all hair types
Affordable
Cruelty-free
Light clean scent
Cons
Some reviewers complained of residue
This dry shampoo is a cult favorite for a reason. It gives your hair an instant refresh and is budget-friendly too. Customers particularly enjoy this no-frills formula, which does exactly what it promises—soaks up undue oils to keep tresses looking fresh and clean. Some reviewers complained that it left residue, but as someone who has been using this spray for a decade, I’ve found that thoroughly shaking the bottle before use, and then combing thoroughly after spraying will eliminate that entirely.
What a reviewer says: “I love this dry shampoo! For background I have super long, medium density hair that I wash every other day and I have bangs, which get oily rather quickly compared to the rest of my hair. Batiste makes my hair look clean and soft, not greasy! I have used it on four-day unwashed hair before (depression!) and while it may not look like I just shampooed that day, it does help A LOT!”

Pros
Contains scalp protecting vitamin E
Affordable
No white residue left behind
Cons
Does not add any volume
This affordable pick can be grabbed at your local drugstore if you’re in a pinch. It imparts lightweight shine and contains scalp-nourishing vitamin E to help your strands look sleek and shiny. For $7 a pop it’s a lot of bang for your buck. However, if you are not a fan of scents, you might want to look elsewhere: this spray is highly perfumed with rose and bergamot.
What a reviewer says: “It doesn’t leave residue and helps my hair not look greasy. I can go so much longer between washes. The trick is to spray it and let it settle, carry on getting ready and rub it in after the rest of your routine.”

Pros
Naturally formulated with rice and barley starches
Cruelty-free
Lightweight enough for curly and fine hair
Cons
Some reviewers complain the nozzle clogs easily
When it comes to effective oil absorption, the combination of rice and barley starches in this dry shampoo are a super-cleaning duo. What’s truly impressive about this spray, though, is how lightweight it is. The texture won’t weigh down even fine, curly hair. Although many reviewers think it works even better when blow dried.
What a reviewer says: “I have fine curly hair that can get oily. This helps absorb the oil but doesn’t weigh it down or anything. I like to spray it on my roots then rub it around with my finger tips. This can also help if you accidentally spray too close and the white of the powder shows. Also, it might add a little volume, but I wouldn’t rely on this product to give you volume or texture.”

REDKEN Deep Clean Dry Shampoo
Pros
Long-lasting
No powdery residue left behind
Adds texture and volume to limp or oily hair
Unscented
Cons
Pricey
Redken Celebrity Stylist Kiley Fitzgerald is a fan of this dry shampoo from Redken. “When hair is really dirty, I opt for a starchy white dry shampoo to spray into the hair and comb to really get the dirt out, like Redken’s new Jumbo Deep Clean Dry Shampoo,” she says. An added bonus is that this product gives your hair a “clean and cooling sensation.”
What a reviewer says: “It’s the only dry shampoo I’ve ever tried that felt like an actual shower. My hair is thick and heavy, when it gets dirty it get heavier, and HURTS, but it also take forever to dry. Normally if I go more than 24 hrs without washing, my scalp starts to literally feel bruised and I have to massage the hair to go in different directions to get some relief until I can wash. Other dry shampoos left me feeling less oily but left my hair white (temporarily), powdery, and generally like I’d dumped baby powder on my head. They also never prevent the pain. This one is somehow magically NONE of that, AND my scalp doesn’t hurt. It’s insane. I love it.”

Pros
All-natural formula
Spray nozzle distributes powder evenly, despite no aerosol
Sustainably packaged
Good for all hair types, including kinky and textured
Cons
Small bottle
A personal favorite of mine, this dry shampoo from Nuele is a powder spray that manages to perfectly refresh and give dull tresses new life without the dangers of aerosol. Because of the lack of spray nozzle, I was worried the shampoo would clump and leave seriously chalky residue, but the powder somehow manages to puff into a fine cloud that distributes a light coating onto my strands and leaves them looking fresh and de-frizzed. It also contains moisturizing aloe to help keep my hair looking sshiny.
What a reviewer says: “This is my first time using a clean dry shampoo, and I love it! Honestly, it kind of creeps me out that I never thought too much about what kinds of chemicals I was spraying on myself using aerosol dry shampoo before…”

Pros
Formulated for color-treated hair
Also works preventatively to protect strands from heat and environmental damage
Adds texture and movement
Cons
Pricey
Specifically formulated for color-treated hair without parabens, sulfates, perfumes, or alcohols, this dry shampoo helps absorb excess oils without fading. Additionally, it protects your strands from environmental stressors and heat damage that can damage color as well. Reviewers have been known to use this dry shampoo not on dirty hair, but also clean—preventatively—to help add movement and texture to flat or limp strands.
What a reviewer says: “I love this dry shampoo it leaves my Platinum blonde hair Feeling and looking clean with zero residue! My hair felt soft and flowed around as if it was freshly washed and styled! This product is definitely worth every penny!”

Pros
Odor-neutralizing scent keeps hair smelling fresh
Great for post-workout use
Good for texturizing
Cons
Pricey
Most dry shampoos can mask scent and absorb oiliness, but this one will actually clean your hair with no water required. Its patented formula actually removes dirts, absorbs sweat, and neutralizes odors, giving you a superior clean—even when your hair is really pushing it. Prevention Digital Director Allie Early swears by Living Proof dry shampoo to keep her blonde hair looking fresh in the summertime: “The bottle is so easy to toss in a weekend bag or use quickly before going out to dinner!”
What a reviewer says: “I went from washing my hair daily! So much damage when I don’t even use heating tools or hair dye. My hair stylist recommended this to help decrease my washing obsession and boy did it work! It makes my hair not only feel clean but also smell amazing.”

Best for Volume
dae Fairy Duster Volumizing Dry Shampoo Powder
Pros
Super-concentrated for long lasting use
Light, pleasant scent
Non-aerosol
Cons
Pricey
If you’re on the hunt for a volumizing dry shampoo that lives up to its promises, look no further than this non-aerosol powder spray from dae. Devoted users are impressed that it can impart texture and volume to even those with fine, oily hair—like Prevention Deputy Editor, Emily Goldman.
What a reviewer says: “I swear by this dry shampoo,” Emily tells us. “I love that it has a powder formula (making it great for travel!) and smells incredible. Most dry shampoos leave a chemical scent, but this one offers up the perfect notes of vanilla and citrus. It’s super-concentrated so a few puffs onto your scalp goes a long way. It does require some rubbing in, but I love that it doesn’t leave my hair feeling anything other than clean and looking voluminous!”

Pros
Long-lasting effects
Good for fine, oily hair
Imparts a good amount of volume
Cons
Some reviewers complained of sticky residue
Want to reduce oiliness and increase volume? This product will give you the best of both worlds and will give even the limpest and oiliest hair types a voluminous lift. Rich in vitamin B and environment-protecting antioxidants, this spray drastically increases texture and shine while eliminating excess oils with the magic of silica. A few reviewers noted that when used on clean hair it can give a boost so drastic it’s best for Bon Jovi or Bardot-like styles and can take the place of dry texture sprays.
What a reviewer says: “I have super oily hair that I wash every other day, and this is the only dry shampoo that works for my hair and doesn’t weigh it down. It actually absorbs the oil and gives me the same look as wash days. Just a few sprays, and I’m good all day. I can’t feel it weighing on my hair at all and the oily feeling is non existent. Also as a bonus, it smells nice!”

amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo
Now 35% Off
Pros
Natural formula leaves no residue
Smells amazing and lasts all day
Good for all hair types
Cons
Not as cleansing as other options
You might want to choose this option just for the pretty package it comes in, but the real plus behind this choice is the smell. All of Amika’s hair products use an ingredient called sea buckthorn—a “superfruit” that not only doles out fatty acids that infuse your strands with scalp-supporting moisture, but also smells inexplicably delicious. Prevention Deputy Editor Emily Goldman is a huge fan for a quick refresh.
What a reviewer says: “Amika all the way!” Emily says. “This dry shampoo has an incredible smell and adds volume to roots. Not to mention, it doesn’t leave hair stiff like so many other dry shampoos. After a few sprays my hair looks refreshed and full of oil-free life!”

Pros
Contains moisturizing coconut oil
Helps tame frizzy hair and flyaways
Adds great softness
Cons
Might be too heavy for fine hair
If your hair tends to be more dry or brittle, this option comes highly recommended. This option won’t leave you with a greasy feel either. Though because it contains coconut oil, it may be a bit too heavy for individuals with thinner hair.
What a reviewer says: “Naturally, my hair is very straw like and dry, but the roots get super greasy super fast and it makes my hair look so flat, so I decided to try this dry shampoo. IT WORKED LIKE MAGIC!!”

Pros
Beige tint blends well for all shades of brunettes
Plant-based oat formula protects scalp health
Balances oils to clean hair, not just mask
Cons
Some reviewers complained the nozzle clogs easily
Brunettes can struggle to find a truly invisible dry shampoo that won’t leave white or gray strands behind. However, this product uses a natural tint that blends into every hair color and was made with dark hair in mind. Plus, Klorane uses all plant-based ingredients.
What a reviewer says: “I am Asian American with dark brown/black hair. After using almost every dry shampoo under the sun, this is the first one that doesn’t leave my hair looking like I have massive amounts of white flakes or dandruff. I follow a girl on Instagram who talks about hair training and hacks with dry shampoo. One thing she recommended was to spray the dry shampoo in your hair the night before to allow your natural oils to absorb, then rub in the rest and style the next morning. Used that trick, and IT WORKED! Finally! I’ve bought so many dry shampoos for brunettes, clear dry shampoos, and read reviews from low to high. This is my second day in a row using it. I brushed out my curls and my hair is style volumized and looking great!”

Best for Blondes
Dry Shampoo Light Tones
Pros
Moisturizing formula with argan oil and vitamin E
Protects against UV damage
Good for balancing brassy tones
Cons
Might be too heavy for fine hair
In contrast with the last pick, this product was made specifically for those with golden and platinum locks. Our blonde friends will appreciate that the powdery formula sprays purple out of the can, like an in-shower purple toning shampoo that cancels brassiness!
What a reviewer says: “It smells great, gives you some volume, and it doesn’t leave your hair stiff and crunchy like a lot of others do. I’m on day 4 hair & with this dry shampoo it looks like I just washed it. Definitely worth the extra money!”

Best for Fine Hair
Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo
Pros
Light scent isn’t overpowering
Lightweight texture won’t weigh down fine hair
Adds good volume
Cons
Some reviewers complain of residue
This “detox” prioritizes maximum oil absorbency while also adding volume and texture to your roots. Though this product tailors to blondes and those with lighter color locks, it also won’t weigh down those of us with thin or fine hair.
What a reviewer says: “ONLY dry shampoo with minimal scent but also light enough not to weigh down my hair. All time favorite!”

Best Splurge
Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo
Pros
Translucent spray leaves no residue
Naturally absorbing powders add volume and shine
Dermatologist-tested and recommended for scalp health
Cons
Extremely pricey
Though this option is steeply priced, it just might be worth the splurge. It does everything you need a dry shampoo to do, with an even more luxurious feel and signature scent. Not only that, but the formula is designed to help impart moisturize to revitalize damaged strands and strengthen while it cleanses. Prevention Assistant Editor Madeleine Haase loves the Oribe brand—and her hair loves it, too.
What a reviewer says: “I have yet to try an Oribe product that I haven’t loved,” she says. “The signature scent of their brand keeps my hair smelling fresh and fragrant all day and their dry shampoo is no exception!”

How do you apply dry shampoo?
Fitzgerald recommends brushing through your hair, then spraying it from about 6-8” away from your roots. Be sure to focus on the areas that are most visible, like your part, your hairline, or behind the ears. Wait a full minute and then rub it into the scalp. For best results she suggests blow drying to activate it a little bit.

How often can you use dry shampoo?
Vaughn tells us that “while dry shampoos have their useful place among your hair care ensemble, it’s best used sparingly.” That’s because with prolonged use, some ingredients can actually over-dry your scalp, leading it to produce more oils, create dandruff, and cause breakage. She recommends not using it more than two days in a row. “The oils and product remain on the scalp until washed away with traditional or clarifying wet shampoo. Therefore, dry shampoo is best used as a temporary solution between regular shampoos.”
How to choose the right dry shampoo for you
Opt for natural formulas. Vaughn tells us that natural ingredients can be less drying on your scalp and prevent over production of the oils you’re trying to eliminate in the first place. Look for ingredients like, “rice starch, which absorbs excess oil and provides a mattifying effect, or arrowroot powder for volume while absorbing oils.”
Prioritize your hair needs. Everyone is different and it’s important to decide what you want to get out of your dry shampoo before shopping. If your hair is fine and flat, maybe you want to prioritize a product that has a reputation for volume to the max! If you tend to have more oily hair vs. dry, your choices may be very different. Take the time to look at your hair and evaluate what your tresses might need to freshen up. Fitzgerald suggests you “find a format and delivery you like and always consult a professional if you are confused or concerned about the use.”
Start off slow. When you are ready to give it a go, Fitzgerald suggests that you “apply less at first and then continue to add to desire as needed.” Many dry shampoos require a bit of time to work, so always be sure to give it a few minutes before rubbing in and seeing if it needs another spritz. Fitzgerald adds that “applying too much dry shampoo or leaving it in the hair and not brushing through can cause scalp imbalances,” so less is more!
